On the day of Roma world day (Apr 8), a festive meeting was held in Rimavská Sobota in Aranybika Hotel, on Apr 7, 2015. The participants were the following: Ternipe organization, Roma Association of European Integration, Rákóczi Association, and SMK-MKP.
József Berényi, chairman of SMK-MKP, drew a parallel between identity struggles of the ethnic Hungarian and Roma community in his speech. He emphasized the need for Roma teachers and the continuation of the journey taken together. The destiny of the ethnic Hungarian and Roma community in Slovakia is common. If the ethnic Hungarian community grows in economy, culture and other areas, the Roma community also becomes stronger, and this is true vice versa. Participants of the friendly meeting emphasized the most important issue of the Roma question, the most critical topics like unemployment, the social situation of Roma, and the issue of education of Roma children.
The world day was officially declared in 1990 in Serock, Poland, the site of the fourth World Romani Congress of the International Romani Union (IRU), in honour of the first major international meeting of Romani representatives, 7-12 April 1971 in Chelsfield near London.
