However by a narrow margin, the British (UK) voters have chosen to leave the European Union. The exit of a member state is something so far unprecedented in the history of European integration. This decision is even so of great importance, as a strong and influential member exits in a period, when Europe faces serious economic, political and security challenges. The Brexit may trigger substantial changes not only in the functioning of the EU, but also in the economic and political life of the remaining 27 member states.
The Party of the Hungarian Community still upholds, that the EU is part of the solution, not part of the problem. During the twelve years of our EU-membership the citizens of Slovakia have undoubtedly become more successful, than they could have become outside the EU. Despite the fact that the EU still does not hold powers in the field of the protection of the national minorities, it is clear, there is a substantially lower chance for anti-minority swings within the EU, than outside the EU.
The European Union needs to be reformed, instead of being destroyed. In the upcoming period the Party of the Hungarian Community, together with its European partners, will be engaged in diminishing the disadvantages triggered by the Brexit. It is of our vital interest, that the European Union sums up its situation, gives the appropriate answers and emerges from the crisis in a more strengthened shape.
