The local government of Štúrovo (Párkány), a town on the Slovak side of the Slovak-Hungarian border, rejects, residents protest at, still the investor insists on the construction of a waste incineration plant. Briefly this is the situation persisting for more than a year in the matter of the planned plastics processing plant in the industrial park in Štúrovo. The representatives of the Party of the Hungarian Community (SMK-MKP) held a press conference about the investment ‘Green Park Štúrovo’.
Szabolcs Bolya, the leader of the local group of the SMK-MKP in Nové Zámky District, stated at the press conference that they are still against the construction of the waste incineration plant and put their weight behind the nearly 8000 people who signed the statement of protest last year.
In relation to the investment Green Park Štúrovo, the representatives of the SMK-MKP informed the press that László Szigeti, local government representative, and Dániel Zoltai, representative of the local government of Komárom-Esztergom County (Hungary) submitted a petition to the European Parliament’s Committee on Petitions in October 2017.
‘We both expressed our views that the plan of the investment is contrary to Slovakia, Hungary, and the EU legislation on the environment, in particular to the relevant Directive 2001/92/EU of the European Parliament and of the Council, and we clearly requested the European Parliament to examine whether the investment complies with this particular legislation on the environment’, said László Szigeti, local government representative and member of the presidency of the SMK-MKP.
The chairman of the Committee on Petitions informed the petitioners by letter that their petition is admissable under the EP’s Rules of Procedure and was forwarded to the European Parliament’s Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety.
Iván Farkas, vice-chairman for the economy and regional development (SMK-MKP), underlined the importance of the developing tourism sector and vine growing: ‘The town of Štúrovo has to decide which path to take: the path that will be good for tourism which the town has been developing for 20 years, or the path of waste management which will drastically increase the environmental pressure on the town and its surroundings. Since we can’t take both.’
