The Party of the Hungarian Community (MKP) has noted with profound shock the recent about-face made by the parties of the government coalition. Slovaks can see the current coalition losing its credibility, as it did in 2016, and certain statements by the government coalition recall the Communist rhetoric of the one-party state of 1989.
It could not be a stable government in which the strongest party has scuttled in the swamp of corruption, ministers are coming in and going out, the prime minister resigned but continues to manage his already fallen system.
It is the decision of the coalition that has lost its legitimacy that Fico’s failed government, now led by the new prime minister hand-picked by Fico, will continue to govern, which will lead to the increase of public’s mistrust in institutions and social unrest. Responsibility for that rests almost entirely with the fallen coalition. Instead of the former government, the puppets — as formal leaders — of the outgoing leaders will pretend to govern Slovakia.
The decision they took yesterday negatively affects Hungarians living in Southern Slovakia, as Hungarian politicians of the governing coalition have made the survival of the fallen coalition possible, reneging their statement made 48 hours earlier when they promised snap elections. This decision has outraged the Hungarian public opinion as well.
The Party of the Hungarian Community continues to pursue intensive dialogue with the parties of the democratic opposition on the possibilities for future cooperation.
