The candidate of the ethnic-Hungarian SMK-MKP party in the upcoming presidential election is chairman of the party Jozsef Menyhart as his candidacy was approved by the congress in Dunajska Streda (Trnava region), which took place on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of SMK-MKP's founding. All the 173 delegates of the congress present voted for his candidacy. Menyhart said that the SMK-MKP wants to show with this step that it is able to have its own candidate of a Hungarian nationality (ethnicity) that will represent its interests.
SMK-MKP commemorated its 20th anniversary in the same town where at the congress on June 21, 1998 entities representing predominantly citizens of the Hungarian minority joined into the Hungarian Coalition Party. At the congress on September 22, 2012, it was renamed to the Hungarian Community Party. It continues to regard as its priority objective and mission to preserve and develop the Hungarian community in its native region. As a stable member of the European People's Party, it strives to build a prosperous society based on the principles of the social and market economy, strengthening the rule of law, as well as respecting human rights and liberties, including minority rights.
